Utilities Case Study - Electricity Network Operator Featured Website Image | Omnitronics

A long‑established electricity network operator serving multiple regional communities across New Zealand has modernised its mission‑critical radio dispatch environment with Omnitronics omnicore Enterprise Dispatch. With a history spanning more than a century, the organisation plays a vital role in enabling safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity delivery for homes, businesses, and essential services across urban, rural, and remote environments.

The organisation owns, operates, and maintains a large and geographically diverse electricity distribution network. Its responsibilities extend well beyond “poles and wires” to include network planning, asset lifecycle management, safety leadership, emergency response coordination, and community engagement — all within a tightly regulated operating environment.

Reliable voice communications underpin all of these activities. From routine maintenance and planned outages to fault restoration during severe weather events, the operator relies on always‑available radio communications to coordinate field crews, maintain situational awareness, and protect worker safety.

To support evolving operational demands, improve resilience, and enable simultaneous multi‑site operations, the organisation selected omnicore Enterprise, Omnitronics’ flagship radio dispatch solution.

The Challenge

The electricity network operator had been a long‑standing Omnitronics customer, operating legacy dispatch platforms including DX‑Altus and RediTALK Dispatch for many years. These systems had proven reliable, but the organisation’s operational model and resilience requirements had evolved.

Several challenges were becoming increasingly important:

  • Concurrent control room operations
The organisation operates two control rooms, including a Disaster Management Centre that must operate at the same time as the primary control room during major incidents.
  • Geographic scale and distance
Radio coverage spans urban centres, rural regions, and remote areas of the North Island, with some radio sites located significant distances from control rooms.
  • Resilience expectations
Dispatch communications must remain available during network outages, infrastructure failures, or natural disasters — precisely when communications are most critical.
  • Continuity and risk management
Any system upgrade needed to minimise operational risk, preserve existing radio assets, and avoid disruption to established dispatcher workflows.
  • Future growth
The organisation required a modern platform that could scale over time while simplifying system management and maintenance.

While the existing dispatch environment remained stable, it lacked the distributed architecture and disaster‑recovery capabilities required for modern, multi‑site operations.

The Radio Dispatch Solution

Best Suitable Dispatch Option

Working with authorised Omnitronics partner Logic Wireless, the organisation deployed Omnitronics omnicore Enterprise Dispatch, taking advantage of its distributed, resilience‑focused architecture.

As a long‑standing Omnitronics customer, the transition from DX‑Altus and RediTALK to omnicore Enterprise was smooth and low risk. Existing radio infrastructure and RoIP gateways were retained, while the new platform introduced significantly greater operational flexibility and resilience.

Radio architecture

The solution incorporates a combination of Omnitronics IPR100 and IPR400 Radio over IP gateways, tailored to the organisation’s geographic and operational requirements:

  • Three IPR100 analog radio gateways connected to three analog channels covering a central North Island region
  • Radio channels at two more remote locations using IPR100 gateways connected to repeaters or donor radios due to their distance from the control rooms
  • IPR100 gateways configured with IP multicast, allowing received audio from repeaters to be distributed to more than one control room simultaneously
  • IPR400 gateways connected to donor radios that communicate directly with dispatch consoles at each control roomIn total, seven radio channels are presented to dispatch consoles at each control room, ensuring consistent access to radio communications regardless of operator location.

Multi‑site dispatch and resilience

The omnicore Enterprise deployment enables five concurrent operators to access the system from any networked location. Both control rooms operate at the same time, allowing the Disaster Management Centre to function alongside the primary control room during major incidents.

A defining advantage of omnicore Enterprise is its distributed architecture. Dispatch consoles do not require a continuous connection to the central server to maintain voice communications. If connectivity to the server is lost, operators can continue communicating directly with the RoIP gateways, preserving essential voice services during outages or emergency scenarios.

This capability significantly strengthens the organisation’s disaster‑recovery posture and ensures communications remain available when they are needed most.

Interoperability and future readiness

The solution was designed to remain vendor‑agnostic, supporting existing analog radio infrastructure and allowing future integrations or system enhancements as operational needs evolve. This approach protects the organisation’s investment while providing long‑term flexibility.

Business Benefits

Since deploying omnicore Enterprise, the organisation has realised clear operational benefits:

Improved Fault Response

Enhanced Crew Safety

More Efficient Network Operations

Stronger Emergency Coordination

Cost Savings
