Allan Cambridge

Duty Officer, Coastguard Nelson

Originally from New Zealand, Allan began his career with degrees in Science and Pharmacy before relocating to the UK, where he spent over 40 years in the pharmaceutical industry, including co-founding two research companies. His favourite way to unwind was offshore sailing in the UK and Europe — much of which was before GPS navigation became affordable for recreational sailors!

In 2015, Allan retired to Richmond, New Zealand. He joined Coastguard Nelson in 2020 as a shore-based radio operator and soon trained as a Duty Officer to take the calls for assistance and organise and manage the Unit’s response 24/7/365.
The Unit had long known that its communication systems were inadequate to properly manage and support the team on the water in the challenging topography of the northern end of the Southern Alps. Soon after joining the Unit, Allan found himself leading the communications and IT upgrade after speaking too enthusiastically about the urgent need for better shore-based systems to meet the needs of the Unit for foreseeable future.

Apart from his use of marine VHF during his UK sailing days, Allan knew very little about communication systems. However, he had always been an early adopter of the advantages of new technologies and had a clear vision of what the Unit wanted to achieve. The large project, which was implemented by Mount Campbell Communications, was completed in June 2025, with much time taken up with fundraising the entire cost and testing/fine-tuning the concept.
